Torrox wants to “revolutionise” public transport. The Town Hall announced this Thursday that it will be free “for all residents”, as well as extending the coverage to reach, for the first time, to the border with Nerja. In addition, thanks to new technologies, users will now be able to keep track of the timetables, both through the information panels that will be installed at the stops, as well as directly on their mobile phones, as the new vehicles have integrated GPS.

These are the main new features which have been announced by the Mayor, Óscar Medina, together with the Councillor for Finance, Paula Moreno, precisely in the area where the new bus stop will be located, on the border with Nerja, where the new bus has also been presented, which joins the existing fleet, a low floor vehicle, adapted to the needs of passengers, with a ramp for people with reduced mobility and also incorporates USB chargers in each seat.

In order to benefit from this measure it will only be necessary to present a card when entering the buses, which can be requested by anyone who is registered in the municipality. The aim is to encourage the use of public transport, bearing in mind the benefits for the environment, as it will favour the reduction of private transport and, therefore, of polluting gas emissions.

140,000 per year cost overrun

Free public transport for all registered residents of Torrox will mean an extra cost of 140,000 euros per year for the Town Hall, but it is compensated by the great advantages that it brings because, in addition to the environmental and traffic benefits, it will improve the daily life of residents and businesses, by providing better connections to all parts of the municipality.

This measure is in addition to the renovation of what will become the large central bus and taxi station, which will be one of the most modern in Andalusia. In addition, information panels will also be installed at the bus stops so that, thanks to new technologies, as the buses will have integrated GPS, users will be able to keep track of the timetables even from their own mobile phones, as an application will soon be available to consult this information.

In addition, for the first time in 40 years, there will be a stop on the two kilometres bordering Nerja. There are many residents of this area who, being Torroxeños, make a daily living because of its proximity to Nerja and finally having a bus connection will be a great relief in their daily routines.
